How to find the right size in jeans
Finding the right size in jeans can be difficult, especially when buying raw denim or selvedge jeans online, where sizes can vary from brand to brand.
In this guide, we show you how to measure a pair of jeans you already own to find the right size before ordering.
Find the right fit first
Before you start measuring, you should know what fit you want. Different fits give different measurements in the waist, hips and thighs.
Please see our own guide to jeans fit before choosing a size.
This is what you need
- A measuring tape
- A pair of jeans that fit you well (recommended)
It can be difficult to measure your body yourself, so we recommend measuring a pair of jeans you already own and like .
Choose a pair of jeans with about the same rise as the jeans you are considering buying. A high-waisted pair of jeans will often have a different width than a low-waisted pair.
In order for the measurements to be as accurate as possible, the jeans you are measuring should have a similar shape and fit .
Step 1: Measure your waist
- Lay the jeans flat on a table.
- Find the waistband, i.e. the top part where the belt sits.
- Measure directly above the waistband from one side to the other.
To find your full waist measurement , multiply your measurement by two.
Example: 40 cm measured flat = 80 cm waist.
Note:
Due to the curvature of the waistband, the measurement will not be 100% accurate, but it gives a good indication of the correct size.
Step 2: Measure your hip width
- Find the widest point of the jeans, usually about 2 inches (5 cm) below the zipper .
- Measure from one side seam to the other.
This measurement tells you something about how roomy the jeans are around the hips and seat .
Step 3: Measure the leg length (Inseam)
- Place the measuring tape in the crotch , where the inner seams meet.
- Measure down the inside of the leg to the end of the pant leg.
This measurement is called the inseam and determines the length of the jeans.
Step 4: Measure the width of the thigh (Thigh)
- Find the widest point of your thigh, usually a few inches below the crotch.
- Measure from one side seam to the other.
This measurement determines how tight or roomy the jeans are in the thighs .
