The 1943 CPO Shirt from Pike Brothers is a classic workwear shirt inspired by the shirts worn by Chief Petty Officers in the US Navy during World War II. The shirt was developed for work on ships where clothing had to withstand wind, moisture and hard use on deck.
The roomy construction and two large chest pockets made the garment practical for work at sea. These details have been part of the design since the 1930s, and the basic construction has changed little over the years.
This version is made from Barrow Red flannel , a heavy cotton fabric with a classic check pattern in red tones. The fabric is brushed after weaving to provide a soft surface and extra warmth, making the shirt ideal as both a regular shirt and a lightweight overshirt in cooler weather.
The shirt is produced in Portugal and follows the authentic fit from the 1940s.
About the flannel fabric
The shirt is made from 310 g/m² cotton flannel , a tightly woven cotton fabric that is brushed after weaving to lift the fibers to the surface. This process gives flannel its characteristic soft feel and a warmer texture than regular cotton.
Flannel has long been used in work shirts because the material combines warmth, durability and comfort. The brushed surface helps retain heat while the fabric remains breathable.
The relatively thick flannel quality means that the shirt works both as a classic shirt and as a light outerwear piece in the transitional seasons.

The story behind the CPO shirt
CPO stands for Chief Petty Officer , a rank in the United States Navy. The shirt was originally developed in the 1930s for work on deck where clothing had to be warm, durable, and practical in inclement weather. Over time, it became a standard part of the work uniform of many sailors.
Today, the CPO shirt is considered a classic in heritage and workwear-inspired clothing. The combination of sturdy materials, functional details and historical design makes the garment still popular among enthusiasts of classic workwear.
