The 1943 CPO Shirt from Pike Brothers is a classic overshirt inspired by the shirts worn by officers in the US Navy during World War II. CPO stands for Chief Petty Officer , and this type of shirt was developed for sailors who worked on deck in cold and demanding weather.
Life at sea placed high demands on clothing. The garments had to withstand wind, moisture and hard use, while also allowing good mobility. Over the decades, specific materials and fits developed that worked particularly well for this purpose. The CPO shirt is one of these classic garments.
Historically, such shirts were often made of wool. This version uses a heavy-duty cotton moleskin , woven in Germany to traditional specifications. Moleskin is a tightly woven and highly durable fabric that is brushed on one side. This gives the shirt a soft, suede-like surface that is both comfortable and durable.
The result is a sturdy overshirt that works equally well as a light jacket over a T-shirt or Henley, or as a warm shirt under a jacket on cooler days. Paired with selvedge jeans and classic workwear, it makes an authentic heritage statement.
