A peacoat is a classic short double-breasted jacket in thick wool. It's a practical garment that makes you look a little more dressed up than, for example, a bomber jacket.
In Norwegian it is actually called pjakkert. Many people also call it a pilot's jacket, although the pilot's jacket is actually a little longer than the pjakkert. The pilot's jacket was intended for officers of higher rank than those who worked with slightly more practical tasks on deck and had to have a slightly more practical and shorter jacket.
